Christmas at Windsor Castle
Christmas at Windsor Castle has begun. Visitors to the historic castle from now until Christmas will be able to see the State Apartments adorned with glittering Christmas trees, twinkling lights and festive garlands
Christmas at Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle, our late Queen Elizabeth’s favourite royal residence, has been an official residence of kings and queens since William the Conqueror had it built as a fortress to protect London from attack from western approaches around 1070. Although it is beautiful all year round, with its crenelated walls, distinct round tower, and opulent interiors, Christmas at Windsor Castle is truly something else.
This year’s spectacular Christmas displays at Windsor Castle will celebrate the 675th anniversary of the Order of the Garter, which was first founded in Windsor in 1348 by King Edward III.
Visitors will be able to have a festive tour the castle from now until Christmas and enjoy the historic State Apartments lavishly decorated for Christmas.
The 20-foot-high Nordmann Fir Christmas tree in St George’s Hall is well worth stopping to admire. Sourced from Windsor Great Park, surrounding the castle, this year the spectacular tree will be topped by a specially commissioned Garter Star to commemorate the anniversary of the Order of the Garter, alongside Coronation-themed decorations to celebrate this special year.
Another highlight includes the Nordmann Fir Christmas Tree in the Crimson Drawing Room, one of the impressively ornate Semi-State Rooms, created as private apartments for King George VI. These rooms are still used by the Royal Family for official entertaining and are open to visitors over the winter months.
And on the Grand Staircase, impressive festive garlands will greet visitors as they enter the State Apartments.
Visitors can also enjoy a spectacular table display of decorative items from the Royal Collection in the Waterloo Chamber – one of the castle’s largest rooms.
The 160-foot-long dining table in the Waterloo Chamber will be laid with porcelain from the Garter Service, and will feature a design inspired by the Garter star and the Order’s motto ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame on him who thinks evil of it)’.
