The Merseyside Maritime Museum will be opening a new gallery on 27 March 2015 to tell the story of the sinking of Lusitania during the First World War.

Lusitania was an unarmed passenger ship that was torpedoed by German submarine on 7 May 1915 as it neared southern Ireland causing the loss of almost 1200 lives.

The German government claimed the ship, which was on its way back from New York, was carrying military supplies. However, British and American enquiries would later declare the sinking to be unlawful.

With most of the crew having lived in Liverpool, the sinking of Lusitania strikes a local chord. To commemorate the centenary of the harrowing event the new gallery will display several objects that will help visitors to gain a greater insight into the ship and those onboard when it sank.

Personal items belonging to Lusitania’s captain and passengers can be seen alongside lifebuoys and deckchairs as well as ship models in a thought-provoking display.
