The Bell’s design is eclectic in the truest sense of the word – the building looks as if an eccentric nobleman has travelled the world and filled his house with curiosities from his travels.
The result is unusual yet utterly charming. The 11 guest rooms offer a quirky, highly individual design, with features including silver birch branches (a nod to the heritage of Ticehurst – ‘the wooded hill where goats graze’), huge copper bathtubs, upside-down tiles and randomly placed light features.
Rooms are not numbered, but instead are uniquely named with personality and style, and called things such as The Benefit of the Doubt, Moon Wild, and Smiles of Memories.
Quirky touches continue throughout the restaurant and pub, from bowler-hat lights and a floor-to-ceiling book pile, to mismatched vintage-style wallpaper and topsy-turvy taxidermy. Each room takes you on a curious journey – a feast of visual surprises. The fine collection of art hung on almost every wall is certainly a conversation starter and the neon sign in the aptly named Stable fondly observes
“I will always love you my friend”, summing up the sense of constancy yet originality awaiting you at The Bell.
Head Chef, Mark Charker and his team offer a seasonal and locally sourced menu of British cuisine with French influences. With two AA Rosettes and a listing in the Michelin Guide 2024, you will certainly
be wowed by the accolades.
In addition, The Bell boasts one of the finest pub gardens in the land. Designed by Chelsea Flower Show gold medal garden designer Jo Thompson, who lives in the village, there is year-round interest.
