London’s National Army Museum undergoes £23m redevelopment project

The National Army Museum will be closed to the public until 2016 while a complete renovation is carried out.

London’s museum dedicated to the British Army and its 600-year history will see a huge renovation project overhaul its displays and galleries due for completion in 2016.

First opened in 1970, the National Army Museum (NAM) has found that its facilities have begun to struggle to cope with ever increasing visitor numbers over recent years which has prompted this latest renovation project.

has a confirmed grant of £11,500,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The grant will help fund the Museum’s ambitious Building for the Future project – set to deliver new opportunities for accessing the Museum and its Collection.

After receiving initial HLF support, NAM will make up the remainder of the £23m project through the fundraising efforts of the Museum and its supporters.

Janice Murray, the Director General of the National Army Museum, said, “We are delighted to have secured this major grant, and cannot wait to get started on this hugely exciting project. Thanks to the help of the HLF, we will be able to enhance the Museum’s unique offering for our ever-growing audiences, ensuring we showcase and make available our outstanding Collection all over the country.”
