Dunrobin Castle

    Dunrobin Castle, Sutherland, Scotland

One of Scotland’s oldest inhabited houses and the most northerly of its great castles, Dunrobin Castle’s keep dates from 1300; the exterior romantically remodelled by Sir Charles Barry in 1845 with many of the interiors by Sir Robert Lorimer after a fire in 1915. The castle is filled with fine furniture, pictures and china, together with memorabilia of the Earls of Sutherland.

This is one of the few remaining formal gardens in Scotland, laid out in French style by Barry. The gardens run down to the sea, with beach and woodland walks, and contain an eccentric and unique museum.

This property offers free access to Historic Houses Association Friends and Members during normal opening hours. Please check opening times.

The HHA represents 1500 privately-owned historic houses, castles and gardens throughout the UK. These are listed buildings or designated gardens, usually Grade I or II*, and are often outstanding. Many are considered to be iconic symbols of Britain’s unique heritage.
